Why choose one of our photography workshops or tours?

Choosing the right photography workshop or tour makes all the difference to the quality and success of your photo travel experience. After running photography workshops for over fifteen years we continue to provide the most exciting and original photo expeditions in New Zealand. Our local, intimate knowledge of the landscape, weather and light gained from two decades of photographing in all seasons means that you will photograph spectacular locations at the most productive times. And as well as capturing New Zealand's iconic scenes you will also photograph at incredible off-the-beaten-track locations which are seldom visited. We take care of all travel arrangements, from knowing where to stay and where to eat, so that you are free to concentrate on your photography. On every workshop, along with one-on-one instruction, we work together as a small group sharing ideas, vision and insights, which makes the adventure as memorable as it is fun.

What can I expect on your workshop/tour?

Our photography workshops and tours are designed to immerse you in spectacular settings in a variety of environments. Landscape photography is an art which requires time to fine-tune the composition, patience to invite the possibility of some serendipity, and awareness of the influence that the light plays in making evocative photographs. This is why we are always on location well ahead of prime photography conditions for our major shoots, in the morning and evening, to allow you to work with your camera in a relaxed and creative way. We believe that having plenty of time to prepare and receive photographic instruction is the best way to ensure that you can make great photographs.

What is the best time of the year to photograph in New Zealand?

Depending on your favourite season of the year there are many choices for when to photograph in New Zealand. Here is the seasonal breakdown:
Summer: December to March
Autumn/Fall: April to May
Winter: June to August
Spring: September to November

What skill level is required to join a workshop?

Our workshops are suitable for all experience levels, from photographers who are just beginning to advanced amateurs and even working professionals. Our emphasis is to give photographers the best opportunities to make great images during the workshop, and provide generous instruction based on individual requirements. Some photographers appreciate one-on-one coaching at every location, while others prefer to work using their normal methods and will request feedback after the shoot.

What camera equipment is recommended for a workshop?

Any camera equipment which you are already familiar with is the right choice, so that you can concentrate on your photography. Prior to the workshop we send out a suggested camera equipment packing list and can offer advice on lenses, filters, tripods and other accessories which you are likely to find useful while photographing in New Zealand.

What fitness level is required?

Our workshops are designed to be suitable for people of all ages in good health and moderate fitness. While activities are not strenuous, on some workshops we may be taking hikes on tracks in wilderness areas, including alpine regions, which may involve uphill walks and uneven ground. It will be necessary to carry your own camera equipment for these activities. Should you have any concerns about your own capabilities and/or fitness in relation to a particular workshop, please contact us to discuss this before registering. There is no obligation to participate on any hikes, and in most cases we can offer an alternative for you.

How many photographers are on a workshop?

Group sizes vary from four to eight participants depending on the workshop.

Can I bring my non-photographer spouse, friend or partner?

Absolutely! Non-photographers regularly join their spouse, friend or partner and always comment on the wonderful experience which they have enjoyed, with the freedom to come out with the group on shoots as they decide.

Can you arrange an exclusive workshop for me and my group/friends?

Yes we can. We have extensive experience in organising customised workshops on an individual or group basis. We can also arrange logistics and support for international photographers who want to run a workshop in New Zealand.

What about accommodations and meals?

To ensure that we are well-rested after our day’s activities we stay in comfortable, modern lodgings which are well equipped. Meals are included as noted in the itinerary and are made using fresh, local produce with choices to suit all tastes and appetites. If you have any special dietary requirements please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate you.
