The Edge of Winter 5-day workshop begins in Queenstown and we travel to Milford Sound, in the Fiordland National Park. We spend two days exploring this incredible area, including taking a spectacular photography cruise through the fiord. Our workshop then moves to Te Anau, on the fringe of the national park, before we return again to Queenstown. The route we travel provides many opportunities to photograph both New Zealand’s iconic scenery and also backcountry landscapes which are seldom seen.
This workshop is suitable for all levels of photographer. With a small group of only six participants there is opportunity on every shoot for one-to-one mentoring and instruction, making the mastering of new techniques and the fine-tuning of your creative style quicker and easier. You are most welcome to join professional New Zealand landscape and nature photographer Phillip Bartlett on this adventure.

Day two QUEENSTOWN – PIOPIOTAHI/MILFORD SOUND
We leave our lodging pre-dawn to be in position for the first light on the landscape. We will work the different compositions in this area as the sun rises before returning to the hotel for breakfast. After breakfast we depart for Piopiotahi/Milford Sound at the northern end of the Fiordland National Park and stop along the way to photograph dramatic mountains carved out by glaciers, lush rainforest and crystal-clear rivers. Our last-light photo session will be on the shores of Freshwater Basin at the head of the fiord.
Day three PIOPIOTAHI/MILFORD SOUND
Our morning shoot is again on the shoreline facing Mitre Peak, The Lion and The Elephant. After breakfast we take a photography cruise through the fiord and out to the Tasman Sea. As well as shooting this incredible landscape of sheer mountains, cascading waterfalls and untouched coastline it is possible that we will see seals and dolphins. We then break for lunch before going out again to explore nearby forest and mountain locations. In the late afternoon we set up on the foreshore to photograph the last light.
Day four PIOPIOTAHI/MILFORD SOUND – TE ANAU
One last chance for first-light photography at Milford Sound. We then return to the hotel for breakfast before departing for the lakeside town of Te Anau. Te Anau is situated on the fringes of the Fiordland National Park and offers superb photo locations in all directions. Our afternoon/last-light photography session is at a high-country location deep in the mountains.
Day five TE ANAU – QUEENSTOWN
Sunrise finds us down at the lakefront to shoot the first light on the Fiordland National Park mountains. After breakfast we make our way back to Queenstown, arriving in the early afternoon, in time to catch the departing flights.
